Arrive Reykjavik

Your epic journey through lush lava fields and the windswept landscapes of Iceland begins in the quirky capital of Reykjavik. The northernmost capital of the world seems infused with vivid color, from the bustling byway of Laugavegur to the enthusiasm of the city’s friendly locals. Spend time exploring Iceland’s Viking heritage, pay tribute to the sun and snap a selfie in front of The Sun Voyager or stroll around the lively Old Harbour before meeting your Travel Director and fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception to kick-start your love affair with Iceland.

DAY 2

Reykjavik – Reykholt – Borgarnes (2 Nights)

Explore the small capital city of Reykjavik on a sightseeing tour this morning. View all the city’s major attractions including the Parliament, the Harpa Concert Hall, and the city’s main landmark, the Hallgrímskirkja Church, perched at the top of a hill in the heart of the city. Leave the city behind and travel through the undersea tunnel Hvalfjörðr to Akranes, whose local Museum Centre you’ll have an opportunity to visit before enjoying views of the rugged coastline from the town’s lighthouse. View Deildartunguhver, Europe’s highest-flowing hot spring, where you could choose to bathe in healing glacial waters as part of an Optional Experience. Then, head to Reykholt, famously the former 13th-century home of one of Iceland’s most loved authors, Snorri Sturluson. Nature takes center stage this afternoon, when you view Hraunfoss and nearby Barnafoss, both beautiful waterfalls in their own right and a soul-stirring way to end your day.

DAY 3

Stykkishólmur and Snæfellsnes Peninsula Excursion

Viking ‘sushi’ is on the menu today as you head to Stykkishólmur where you’ll ‘Dive Into Culture’ when you board a cruise past the tiny coves and islets of Breidafjordur Bay. Sample fresh seafood pulled straight from the waters of the bay, before heading along the rugged shores of Snæfellsnes Peninsula, whose geological wonders you’ll get to explore later. See pretty fishing villages and admire your serene surroundings, characterized by lava fields, volcanoes, glaciers, springs, and yellow and black sand beaches. The main attraction for your viewing pleasure is Snæfellsjökull glacier, a beautifully shaped stratovolcano at the very end of the peninsula. The glacier is also known as the location for Jules Verne’s novel ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’. Return to your hotel in Borgarnes, where tonight you’ll join your travel companions for dinner at your hotel.

DAY 4

Thingvellir National Park – Gullfoss – Geysir – Selfoss

Mother Nature’s magic touch can be seen around every turn on today’s exploration of Iceland’s ‘Golden Circle’. Visit the ‘Golden Waterfall’ of Gullfoss, saved at the turn of the last century by the tenacity of a farmer’s daughter who threatened to throw herself into its depths if it was developed for hydroelectric power. Then, head to the world-famous hot spring area of Geysir and see Strokkur shoot a spectacular plume of water and steam high into the air. You’ll see first-hand how the movements of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates have carved into the earth’s crust, in the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, before stopping at Efstidalur Dairy Farm for a quick ice cream tasting. This evening, ‘Connect With Locals’ with a local storyteller and her songwriter husband, and delve into their colorful family history, then join them for an exclusive ‘Be My Guest’ dinner. Continue to Selfoss later, where you’ll stay overnight.

DAY 5

Selfoss – Reykjanes – Blue Lagoon – Reykjavik

You can almost feel the Earth simmering under the surface as you journey across Reykjanes Peninsula, a UNESCO Global Geopark. This is the only place in the world where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is visible above sea level. View Strandarkikja and let some of its legendary powers bring you good luck. Then, watch as sulphurous steam emerges from the lunar landscapes surrounding Lake Kleifarvatn. Continue to Grindavík – its long-standing fishing heritage visible in the harbour. ‘Dive Into Culture’ at the world-famous Blue Lagoon (please remember to pack your swimwear), whose steaming turquoise waters are said to have healing powers. For an extra special treat, rub some of the lagoon’s famous silica-mud on your skin and enjoy a sauna with lagoon views. This evening, we reminisce over the myths and legends we’ve encountered along the way, during a Farewell Dinner with newfound friends and your Travel Director.

Wind your way through the city, past the grand pink Casa Rosada, and bold, bright La Boca. View the ornate Teatro Colon and pay homage to Eva (Evita) Peron in the final resting place of Buenos Aires’ most noteworthy residents, Recoleta Cemetery. Embrace Argentinian culture at a Be My Guest experience this evening as you ‘Connect with Locals’, joining a local family in Palermo Soho who’ll share their homemade family recipes, the secrets of kneading bread and the art of the passionate Tango.

Buenos Aires – Tierra del Fuego National Park – Ushuaia (2 Nights)

An expedition through the extraordinary landscapes of Patagonia begins today as you fly to the world’s southernmost city, Ushuaia. On arrival, explore the dramatic landscapes of Tierra del Fuego National Park, Argentinian’s southern-most national park on the border of Chile. Join a Local Specialist to delve deep into its natural splendor. Admire its beautiful waterfalls, forests and snow-capped mountains in which the wildlife of this area find sanctuary. Keep a keen eye out for red foxes, condors, eagles and beavers. Come face to face with the biological richness of Tierra del Fuego Island and its incredible scenic beauty, enjoying views over the Beagle Channel at Ensenada Bay, the glacial waters of Roca Lake and the deep Bay of Lapataia Bay. DAY 4

Ushuaia

This morning, join a Local Specialist and your fellow travellers for a tour of Ushuaia including a visit to the Museo Maritimo y Del Presidio, where you’ll explore the history of the Prison at the End of the World and learn about the famous prisoners who were incarcerated there. Later, delve into its history as a former penal colony and missionary base on your own, or consider joining an optional cruise excursion on the Beagle Channel focusing on the scenic archipelago, wildlife and history. Learn about the great shipwrecks of the region, as well as the dogged determination of the first European explorers, who in the 19th century navigated this inhospitable region which has since had a turbulent history. Consider taking a longer excursion that includes views of lazy colonies of sea lions and Magellanic penguins, which Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan first saw in the early 16th century.

Ushuaia – El Calafate (2 Nights)

Leave the “end of the world” and fly to El Calafate on the shores of Lake Argentino, the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park with its spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier. Your cruise of the Beagle Channel focuses on the scenic archipelago, wildlife, and the history of the region. Los Glaciares National Park Excursion

The day is dedicated to a deep exploration of the striking UNESCO-listed Los Glaciares National Park. Touring with a Local Specialist, you’ll come face-to-face with its arctic blue and white glaciers that are fed by the massive South Patagonian Ice Field, milky colored glacial lakes, and towering snowcapped peaks. Discover the magnificent Perito Moreno Glacier, which towers above the icy waters of Lake Argentino. You could perhaps witness massive igloo icebergs plunging into the lake with thunderous force. Experience the rugged solitude of the windswept steppe and the quiet southern beach forests, before heading back to El Calafate for an evening spent at leisure. The Patagonian Steppes give way to the granite spires of Paine, otherwise known as Cleopatra’s Needles, the main features of the UNESCO-listed Torres del Paine National Park. We’ll join a Local Specialist to delve behind the scenes of this extraordinary frontier land that few have explored. Connect with the inspiring natural landscape, celebrating one of the world’s last true wilderness areas. Wander past cascading waterfalls, roaring creeks, shimmering lakes, and jagged mountain spires. Your afternoon in the park will feature the Torres towers seen from the eastern region. DAY 9

Torres Del Paine – Puerto Natales (2 Nights)

Follow your Local Specialist on the famous “W” Trail that stretches from the northern shores of Lake Nordenskjöld, named after a Scandinavian explorer who probed much of the region in the early 20th century. Head to the snowcapped Monte Almirante Nieto, which anchors the southeastern extreme of the Paine Massif. Wander past pebbled beaches, rugged steppe landscapes, and Andes shrublands on your journey. After lunch, visit the Milodon Cave, where evidence of a giant prehistoric ground sloth was found by German Explorer Hermann Eberhard. There is also evidence of prehistoric human habitation within Cueva del Milodón, dating back as early as 6000 BC. Your base is the colorful fishing town of Pueto Natales on the Seno Ùltima Esperanza where one of Trafalgar’s Stays with Stories is your home-away-from-home for the next two nights. This warm, ecologically sound building, set against the backdrop of Patagonian steppes that lead up to the mountainscape beyond, lets the rugged outdoors Patagonian landscape inside.

Puerto Natales, Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers Excursion

Today’s exploration takes you by boat up the Rio Serrano, passing the Southern Icefield (Campo de Hielo Sur) toward the icy turquoise sheets of the Serrano Glacier. Take some time with a Local Specialist to explore the impressive glacier with a hike through unspoiled, cool rainforest landscapes to Seno Ultima Esperanza (“Fjord of the Last Hope”) where you will see the rest of the Southern Patagonian Icefield. Continue through the fjord by boat with views of the Balmaceda Glacier and Serrano Glaciers in the background. We leave Anchorage bound for the untamed wilderness of Denali National Park where a Local Specialist will reveal insights into the rare subarctic flora and fauna of the park. Denali National Park and Free Time

Fairbanks Sightseeing

After breakfast, you will enjoy a city tour of Fairbanks, Alaska’s “Golden Heart” city. Then, you are boarding the Riverboat Discovery to visit a recreated Athabascan Indian Village. DAY 6

Fairbanks – Valdez (2 Nights)

We journey south to the port community of Valdez on Prince William Sound. As you carve your way through this rugged state along the Richardson Highway, the first major road built in Alaska, you’ll encounter the snow-capped summits of the Alaska Range, expansive glaciers, and the Trans Alaska Pipeline which runs parallel to the highway. Stretch your legs during a brief stop at the Historic Rika Roadhouse, an important crossroads for travelers, and the Wrangell St. Elias Visitors Center, before arriving in Valdez.

DAY 7

Valdez

Delve into the heritage and culture of Valdez, the Copper River Basin and Prince William Sound during this morning’s visit to the Valdez Museum. Later, keep a keen eye out for seals, otters, sea lions and porpoises as you cruise around Prince William Sound, admiring the plunging ice cliffs of Columbia Glacier which have calved giant icebergs into the bay. Enjoy lunch against the backdrop of your wild surrounds before returning to Valdez, your home for a second night.

Valdez – Anchorage (2 Nights)

We begin our return journey to Anchorage this morning, crossing Thompson Pass, one of the snowiest places in Alaska. ‘Make A Difference’ during your afternoon stop at the Musk Ox Farm. Here you’ll join a Local Specialist for a guided tour to view the Arctic Musk Oxen and learn how this non-profit organization promotes sustainable agriculture practice. Continue your journey west, arriving in Anchorage later today where you’ll toast to new friends over a memorable Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 9

Anchorage – Seward – Kenai Fjords Cruise – Anchorage

We journey along the Scenic Seward Byway this morning to the port community of Seward. Our first stop is a ‘Make a Difference’ the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where a Local Specialist will reveal the role of this wildlife rehabilitation center. Next up is a sightseeing cruise, including lunch, into the icy heart of Kenai Fjords National Park. Share the waters with Humpback whales and glacial icebergs as you enjoy lunch on board.
